About this deal

In the hunting: season he often failed to attend its meetings, and when he was turned out he did not greatly repine. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. g the dynamic between tradition and progression; the need/desire for women to be more than wives and mothers; the hardships of rural life in the early 20th century…etc.

The dust jacket is poor with chips to the corners and spine ends, darkening to the spine, light overall soiling. Be it Carne, a traditionalist who doesn't want to be pitied for his crumbling finances or Sarah Burton, the fiery headmistress who has modern reforms in mind yet hopelessly in love with her fiercest opponent, or Lydia Holly, who has to give up her education or Madame Hubbard who teaches young girls to dance ti ridiculous songs, every character will earn a place in your heart.South Riding is a rich, panoramic novel, bringing vividly to life a rural community on the brink of change. One main story that is well done in novel and tv version alike is the one of Sarah's student Lydia Holly, a working class girl with a scholarship who after her mother dies has to care for all her younger siblings and thus loses her chance at life for a while. Showing how public decisions can mold the individual, this story offers a panoramic and unforgettable view of Yorkshire life. As she explains to Alderman Mrs Beddows (whose "racy tongue" was borrowed from Holtby's mother): "If the growth of civilisation means anything, it means the gradual reduction of the areas ruled by chance – Providence, if you like.

Vellum a touch grubby, boards darkened at edges, corners bumped and gently worn, dints to top edges. It occurs to me that I've made the novel and the tv series sound unrelentingly grim, which it's not; there is a lot of humour in it as well - Holtby gets her satiric pen out for many of the council meetings (so much so that her mother felt obliged to resign as an Alderman after the novel got published), and Sarah's drive to install passion in her girls is appealing if you have any soft spot for inspiring teacher stories at all. Catlin never overcame his resentment at his wife's friendship with the woman Vera described as her "second self". There is old, clear tape to the exterior corners and spine ends as well as along the length of the spine edges and flap folds. Book Society bookplate to front pastedown, related clippings tipped onto front free endpaper; cloth slightly creased and dulled at spine; jacket slightly dulled at spine with some very minor creasing, but overall a very good copy. South Riding was a bestseller, and in 1938 was made into a film, directed by Victor Saville and starring Ralph Richardson.

This book is infatuated with the romance of the Lord of the Manor - but at the same time it is trying to reconcile that particular fantasy with very worthy ideals like feminism, quality education for women, alleviation of poverty, trying to provide proper health care and housing for very vulnerable people and hoping there won’t be another war. Centred around a County Council, the novel illustrates how public decisions can mold the individual, at the same time offering a panoramic and unforgettable view of Yorkshire life. I think I need to revisit The Crowded Street at some point, maybe once I’ve read one or two of her others.

The character who comes closest to a leading role, radical headmistresss Sarah Burton, suffers the most in the last third of the tv version because Davies as opposed to Holtby in the novel inevitably privileges Sarah-the-lover over Sarah-the-headmistresss and fataly changes some of her background and motivations. By contrast, Davies, presumably to present Joe as a clueless socialist, gives him a speech to his fellow councilmen of how they should pay attention to the social programs abroad "like Chancellor Hitler's in Germany", which isn't in the novel at all. Winifred Holtby was a committed socialist and feminist who wrote the classic South Riding as a warm yet sharp social critique of the well-to-do farming community she was born into. Original quarter vellum, ruled in gilt, sea-green linen boards, green morocco title label lettered in gilt to spine. But Holtby understood the necessity of conveying progressive ideas to the widest possible readership, of the kind that Woolf scorned in her essay "The Middlebrow". And it is chance that makes progressive, idealistic Burton fall in love with the local squire Robert Carne, a symbolic figure of reaction, who opposes the expansion of local government and the widespread benefits it would bring. Au final, un livre riche, offrant tout le panorama d'une époque au coeur d'un village (fictif, certes) du Yorkshire. She would have continued to make war on muddle and ignorance; but without the experience of that supreme defeat and humiliation (a little softened by Mrs. In writing the novel, Holtby – an ardent feminist, socialist and pacifist – drew on the experiences of her mother, Alice Holtby, the first woman to be appointed to the position of alderman on East Riding County Council.
