I wish they had gone deeper on that or clients that didn’t do therapy but came to figured out their hurdles.

From falling into the comparison trap to the nagging battle hymn of “YOLO”, the seemingly inescapable siren song of technology is all around us. I appreciated the anecdotes that were related to her year-long challenge but some others were simply anecdotes that happened to occur during it and I failed to see the connection. The book also explores the tiny house movement and how to be a minimalist by effective steps such as decluttering your house. The book encourages readers to reassess their relationship with technology and shift towards a ‘less but better’ approach.Do you want to live a meaningful life—with very few regrets—and make a positive difference in the world? Instead it uses Millburn and Nicodemus’ anecdotal examples to provide a sample 21 day journey to “strip away the superfluous so we can focus on what’s important”. Obviously, the author felt he could still lead an enriched life if he rid himself almost entirely of his possessions. I recommend this workbook because it’s an excellent tool for helping children aged 2–4 years old to develop their fine motor skills and support cognitive development. There were some things that for me felt very American and wouldn’t necessarily be found here in the UK, but generally it translates to UK living very well.

Minimalism is a hot topic right now, as people react to the hyper-consumerist culture that’s been passively accepted for the past several decades, but has left us with suffocating levels of stuff, debt, and stress. He then goes on to describe his “aha” moment when he realises that he needs to make a change in his life. He says that the time taken to get it out of the cupboard and plug it in isn’t as annoying as you think but I’m afraid I disagree there. I recommend this book because it offers a fascinating account of the rise of minimalism through the voices of its creators. Newport is encouraging a movement towards digital minimalism, a world where people can engage in conversations around meals without obsessively glancing at their phones.Whether you\'re travelling across the world or through the pages of your book, I\'ve got you covered. This method helped me remove around 150 books from my bookshelves, which I previously couldn’t bear to part with. To better understand and share the concept of minimalism, you should read books that focus on this topic. Three of these books come from the Japanese school of minimalism whilst the rest are written by American authors.

But I do think there’s this path you can trace through history with people who have participated in this idea, moved it in different directions, try it again over and over again. They were seeking to quiet the madness of modern life and refocus the thought process, to examine one single flower rather than the field, to strike one single note and understand how it related to the many, to turn off their minds and float downstream. Whether it’s electoral politics, or climate change, or coronavirus, so many things feel beyond our perception. Start small, with just one room, or one part of your life, like your closet or how much time you spend using technology. I’ve been trying to encourage my mum to declutter for a while but this section made me realise I had been going about it the wrong way. Even if that question whispers to you, are you brushing it aside because you don’t know what to change in life’s busyness? Now that my job literally revolves around technology and social media, I understand how digital habits can drain our time and happiness away.

Instead, we should be living with what’s already around us and adapting to the ephemerality of life.

Personally, and this is just my own bias, I think no political or social movement can exist without a cultural aspect, a coherent cultural production. The professional decluttering and design team Cary and Kyle of New Minimalism will guide you through the process of decluttering your home and emotional attachment to your belongings, resulting in a beautifully designed living space that is both tidy and inviting. She does herself admit that the same method will be applied to every room of the home and she really does mean it. As with some of the other books on this list, I did start to lose interest around halfway through and thought some of the tips were repetitive.
