Later in life Iwould come into contact with more authors in the genre that portrayed ladies as main characters. I am currently editing my first YA novel which I hope to be able to share with you all in the future. The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries: Drama and Danger: New for 2022, a mystery-filled detective story for children, perfect for fans of Robin Stevens! I absolutely flew through this brilliant new detective series, reading both the physical book and listening to the audiobook. A gripping historical mystery set in the heart of Georgian London’s theatreland, the story is inspired by real Black British figures and brings to life a crucial period in Britain’s past.

The main protagonists are two young girls (Lizzie is twelve) who become detectives and try to solve the mystery behind an attack on Lizzie’s father at the theatre. Praise for The Week Junior Children’s Book of the Year: Breakthrough Award:“What a joyful, heartstopping, theatrical whirlwind of a book”“Everything about this beamed magnificence and made my heart soar”“Its originality and freshness comes from the way that real history and historical characters are cleverly incorporated into the story, putting Black history firmly at the centre. Accompanied with beautiful illustrations by Simone Douglas, which really helped to bring this book to life, this story had me guessing all the way through which shows what a wonderfully written book this is. In the end, the characters get on extremely well together and both characters were needed in the process.I think that the reason the author wrote this book was to spread the word about Black history, because Lizzie is part of a proud African family, and the slave trade was one of the main themes. Its originality and freshness comes from the way that real history and historical characters are cleverly incorporated into the story, putting Black history firmly at the centre. The characters Elizabeth, who is referred to as Lizzie throughout the book, and Belle come from different backgrounds and especially make this book interesting. On the other hand, if Belle was the narrator, it wouldn’t have shown all of the family events that Lizzie goes through.
