About this deal

If she speaks before she completes the quest set to her by the Fair Folk and their queen, the Lady of the Forest, she will lose her brothers forever. Although the fair folk are always a presence, ineffable and changeable as the tides, I haven’t often had quite as much idea of a world where people simply lived alongside them.

To make matters worse, her father doesn't know whom to trust anymore, as the mysterious Cathal also disappeared at the same time as the baby. From then on I knew what starwort was, and I began to teach myself about other plants that could hurt or heal. The sister must maintain silence for the duration of her task, and must rescue her brothers all at once, not as each shirt is completed. While traveling through a small village, Liadan is taken by a pair of men belonging to a notorious band of outlaws. Set in the Celtic twilight of ancient Ireland, when myth was law and magic a force of nature, this is the tale of Sorcha, seventh child of a seventh son, the forbidding Lord Colum, and of her six beloved brothers.Oonagh, wanting her son by Colum to inherit Sevenwaters, attacks Sorcha and her brothers and turns the boys into swans.

He hates Lady Oonagh bitterly for trying to poison Eilis, and tries to get his father to realize her duplicity, though she stops him before he can. First published in 1999, Daughter of the Forest is loosely based on the traditional story of The Six Swans, which appears in Grimm’s Fairy Tales and has been re-told in many versions, including one by Hans Christian Andersen.

Indeed, it’s interesting that where in some books, nebulous, and unquestioned magic feels like a weakness, here, with Marillier’s mix of the mundane and spiritual, and the way the magic interweaves through the books setting, the mystery itself was a strength. Clodagh shares a psychic mind-link with her twin sister Deirdre ( Dair-dra), just as her father, Sean, shares with his twin Liadan. Marillier’s gift with description, place and explanation is simply breath-taking, portraying a world which is as real as it is mysterious. We’re told one villain was “punished”, though given what a nasty piece of work he was, something a little more specific would have been welcome.

Conor had always loved learning, and when he was quite little he had struck up a bargain with a Christian hermit who lived in a hillside cave above the southern lakeshore. After decades as Ciaran's familiar, his story wins the sympathy of Padriac's daughter, the fierce Aisha who is visiting for the first time from norseland Xixón.

When she realizes that they, in fact, did no such thing, she is heartbroken, but he abdicates his rule, leaves Briton, and joins her in Sevenwaters and she is overjoyed again. When it came, the resolution of Sorcha’s romantic plot, especially given the understandable legacy of her sexual assault, was highly triumphant, and though it is made very clear the fair folk have been playing a long game all along, and that there are major threads still to tie up, Sorcha very much earns her happy ending.

This is a recommendation, despite some misgivings, because while I was never so in love that I hugged the book to my chest and danced around the living room (yeah, that happens sometimes), it was also not bad. Daughter of the Forest is a testimony to that talent, a first novel and the beginning of a trilogy like no other: a mixture of history and fantasy, myth and magic, legend and love. Lady Oonagh effectively takes over his mind, but when his children disappear he is so shaken by loss that he regains some of his freedom. On the one hand, that is an intriguing idea, on the other hand, it is difficult to keep a story moving when the heroine never speaks.Sorcha nurses him back to health, though he disappears before Oonagh's attack on Sorcha and her brothers. We hated this ritual parade of family identity, though it became easier for the boys once they reached young manhood and Father began to see them as of some use to him.
