About this deal

If you guess someone else’s secret then it will be exposed live on tv and that contestant is eliminated.

It's quite hard to discuss the book without spoiling it for others but the premise 2nd bookis based once again in the Welsh mountains. Picking up Ffion’s story, and the filming of a reality show set in the fictional village of Pen Y Ddraig, I was hooked from the start. It does go on slightly where it gets frustrating at points but comparing this to the main plot provided balance. It's a twisting and turning ride through the Welsh countryside, with many red herrings and secrets revealed as we go. Several of them make an appearance, and Caleb (Seren's boyfriend) and Ceri (the postwoman) play important roles, but overall the story is much more focused on the reality show contestants and crew and their filming location outside of town.

Published in 2023 and the second book in the DC Ffion Morgan series, A Game Of Lies by Clare Mackintosh is set in the Welsh mountains where seven reality show contestants are stranded and have no idea what they’ve signed up for. Ze moet weer samenwerken met brigadier Leo Brady, met wie ze een geschiedenis heeft, en de duistere kanten van het programma komen naar boven terwijl ze informatie verzamelen en onderzoeken wat er gebeurd kan zijn. Her will-they-won't-they-well-they-already-did-but-will-they-again relationship with English DS Leo Brady is also very believable and it's interesting to see how it plays out in the context of the investigation.

This book however was really frustrating in that when you're reading a detective/thriller book part of the fun is being able to try to guess the killer. I read the ARC for the first book in the “DC Morgan” series (The Last Party) in 2022, and I remember saying if another book about DC Ffion Morgan came out, I’d be here for it. Stranded in the Welsh mountains, seven reality show contestants have no idea what they've signed up for. After the End was published in 2019 and became an instant Sunday Times bestseller, and in 2021 Hostage flew straight into the top ten. There's some great world building/family secrets/personal details in TLP, and AGOL expands on those a bit. When their secrets start to come out and a contestant goes missing, it's up to DC Ffion Morgan to solve the case. I enjoyed the format of this one, it has a reality television series as the main point of the plot and throughout the book we get different points of view from the contestants. I'm not gonna lie, I have a weakness for bad reality television so the premise of this book was right up my alley. I’m a big fan of Clare’s books, and when I heard that After Party would be followed on, I was looking forward to this.
